Happy birthday to a great designer – whose work never goes out of fashion. Were he still here he’d be 126 today – and would be able to see items he designed still in demand.
How can I not applaud a designer who believed in less is more and who wanted to strip architecture down to ‘almost nothing’.
His designs look so simple, but in reality it takes real design genius to strip something down to its bare bones and still make it beautiful. Like his Brno chair for example.
And of course his ubiquitous Barcelona chair – even though I see these every day in my lobby at work I will never tire of them.

And it wasn’t just clean lines with furniture, but it was also carried right through to his architecture. I could move into this house quite happily you know…it’s the Barcelona building he designed, destroyed intitially but now reconstructed.

He has had a huge influence on contemporary design and architecture, this amazing infographic from ArchDaily gives an idea of just how much.
So happy birthday Mies…thanks for the straight lines.
